I almost missed the featured creature for this month. I’m going to keep this preamble quick because I am actually really sick and cannot think of anything to say. Enjoy your first entry about an ai-ey.
Name: Tower of Knowledge
World: Green/Sky
Material: Steel and Concrete
Thought Type: Unconstrained
Species Type: Building Ai-ey
Habitat: N/A. Only eighteen exist, and they are stationary
Ai-ey’s are amongst the most elusive and least understood creatures on this planet. They are so rare, that in many parts of the worlds they are thought to be myths, or simply misunderstood pieces of Losttec. For those who live in the shadow of one of the Towers of Knowledge, the existence of these ai-eys is undeniable. Though there have been stories of fake Towers of Knowledge built at various times in history, so for naturalists who are unable to travel to the confirmed towers, it is difficult to separate myth from fact.
Towers of Knowledge are morally Human beings made of incorruptible metal and wires housed in towers made of regenerating concrete that each stand 424 metres tall. They do communicate with Humankind and Dridkind, however they claim to have an agenda that is beyond our understanding, and in service of that agenda they often speak in riddles or blatantly lie. Furthermore, the individual Towers of Knowledge each have their own opinion about mortals, and some have proven more reliable than others.
There have been conflicting claims about the number and age of the Tower’s of Knowledge even from the Towers themselves. The current consensus is that there are eighteen existing Towers. Of these, the following eight have been observed by Humankind:
- The Krestmadas Tower – Built within the Krestmadas Mountain Range, this tower claims to be the God of the Kybog Cargo of Humans and is worshipped as such.
- The Lying Tower of Habile – Supports the Kingdom of Habile at the south of Continent Prime, as long as they engage in its terraforming rituals. As Humankind ventured into the Far Away Lands, this Tower’s claims about the Worlds are being disproven, and there is currently a war between the Tower and the Royal Family.
- The Tower at the Top of the World – A tower that has only been seen at a distance by explorers in the icy Southern Ocean. It is said to lay at the South Pole.
- Shipwreck Tower – Mostly submerged in the East Ocean, only the top part of the tower reaches above the waves, and hundreds of ships travelling between Prime Continent and the Far Away Lands have crashed onto it. It’s only contact with Humankind is to inform nearby ships of survivors with its herald droons.
- Voice of the Ocean – Stands on a remote island in the West Ocean. It has rarely been visited, but it sends herald droons to the Ocean Makers to negotiate on terraforming.
- Kyvanna of Eddun – A tower that encouraged the building of the jungle city of Eddun along the Hylax river. It appears to love Humankind.
- Far Away Tower – A Tower discovered on the Far Away Continent, and the nexus around which the city of Pyret was built. It has so far aided the Human colonists but is still described as aloof.
- Mirage Tower – A Tower that has been glimpsed by traders in the Ghallo Desert. Thousands of legends about encounters with it exist, and it plays a huge role in the culture of the Ghallo Nomads. However, no facts besides its existence have ever been confirmed.
The following three have been observed by Dridkind:
- The Tower on the Plateau – A Tower on a plateau by The Lake Where the Stalax River Originates. It rarely interacts with the outside world, and it assists The Forest That Rings the Lake in exchange for them maintaining its privacy. Despite this, the leaders of both the Keepers of the Empty Forest and the Stalax River Forest maintain a relationship with this Tower.
- Ramparossa Tower – A tower within the Forest at the Edge of Ramparossa, that is visible from the city of Erede along the border between Ramparossa and the Forest. It doesn’t appear to like Dridkind or Humankind, yet it still plays a huge role in Ramparossan/Forest relations.
- The Tower on the Horizon – Reports from a Forest far to the north report a Tower being visible on the horizon far to the north. These reports are rare and degraded, so no knowledge of this Tower is confirmed. Even its existence is debated.
Whilst these eleven Towers of Knowledge are accepted by most naturalists as real, there are rumours of other Towers that are unconfirmed, mostly originating from the known Towers themselves. He following seven Towers are accepted as real by most naturalists and other experts on the Towers.
- Tower on the Small Moon
- Tower on the Large Moon
- Tower at the North Pole
- Tower on the Hidden Continent
- Lost Tower of the Far Away Lands
- The Flying Tower
- Tower Beneath the Ocean
Here is also one Tower that we know has died, as the Ruins of Allap are easily accessible and thousands of accounts of the Tower’s fall have made it to the present day.
Despite many of these Towers interacting with Human and Drid naturalists, there is still little known about how they survive. They claim to be able to observe the Worlds from the sky, and can communicate with each other despite the distances between them. These claims have been tested, most notably by the Ramparossan scientist Hamlo Lapune’s Great Worldswide Experiment and found to be substantiated. His proves that the Towers, and possibly all ai-ey have incredible telepathic abilities, however their telepathy is incompatible with Dridkind’s Black World telepathy. Each Tower hosts a colony of ai-ey creatures called droons, that serve as heralds, soldiers, workers or terraformers.
All Towers of Knowledge, no matter what their politics, are interested in terraforming rituals. They tend to present themselves as enforcing balance between the Black World and the Green World, though they rarely explain how hey determine what balance looks like.
To find more information on the Towers of Knowledge, Kalle’s Biography of Kyvanna of Eddun provides accurate depictions of the interior of a Tower, and a believable history of Kyvanna that includes the Tower’s own words. This is regarded as the most informative text on the Towers, however readers must remember that Kyvanna is an individual, and there are differences between it and the other Towers not explored in the text.
