Monthly Writing Prompts Challenge #3 – Vault

I’m back from my holiday in Sri Lanka (more on that later) and have decided to post the March story, Vault, even though it does still feel like a draft. Why? Well partly I just want to get it over with and move on to the next challenge, but also I think it is a very interesting draft. Maybe some feedback might help me make it more readable.

This story is told in the form of the access history of a vault on a trillionaire’s spaceship. I played around with the idea of telling a murder mystery story in this format, but I soon realised that whilst I could set up the mystery well enough, it left me with no realistic way to do a reveal. So instead, I decided to make a comment on how much the actions of the super rich and powerful are hidden from us, and how even when we are presented with cold hard facts, there are still attempts to spin those facts in a way that protects them.

Maybe I was too ambitious thinking I could do something like this in just over half a month. Still, I got a story out. Check out Vault here:

Document #334

Printed Transcript of Contents and Access History of the High Security Vault found in the ruins of the Dunman Estate Private Cryo-Ferry.

Note: his printout was obtained only after the door to the vault was powered with great effort. We remain unable to open the vault, however investigation with sonar suggests the contents list is accurate and all items are completely preserved. Including the dead body.

Now it’s time for me to get to work on the next story. The prompt is ‘Liberate’, so I’m going to have to think hard about that one. My first thought was to do something topical, but I’m not sure I can handle that much rage right now. We’ll see what I come up with.

Until then, everyone try and stay safe out there.
