Redoing Vault

I wasn’t too happy with how my monthly story for March, Vault, turned out. I went into that month planning to do a flash piece based on a list of what was in an ancient vault. I was writing this in February, already a short month, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to work on it during the last week of the month due to a holiday, so a flash piece just made sense.

The problem though is that I got too carried away with the idea. I tried to make a murder mystery based on the items deposited and withdrawn, and the comments people left. I eventually figured out though that while it was fun creating clues this way, there wasn’t any way to do a reveal. I managed to cook something up, but I wasn’t happy with the conclusion. Besides, it was very hard to actually read. I see Vault v1 as a fun experiment, but it bothered me having something so non-functional listed as one of my stories.

This was bothering me so much that after I posted Liberate, I went back to the drawing board for Vault. I decided to stick with my very first idea, of a list of items in an ancient vault far into the future. I sat down, wrote new stuff, copied some items, and ended up with a piece less than 800 words long that I think says more than the original version of Vault did despite being longer. I may not be my best work, but I finally have a version of Vault that I feel happy about sharing with the world. Click the picture to go and read it. A link to the original has also been included if you’re curious.

Now I have four short stories each written within a month that I am satisfied with. I hope you all enjoy at least one of them too. If you haven’t read the other monthly stories, you can find them by clicking HERE. The shortest is Vault coming in at just under 800 words, whilst the longest, Interface, is over 8000 words long. I’m currently working on my next story, Allure, and I’m really feeling good about this one.

Thank you everyone who keeps checking out these stories. Hopefully we’ll end this year with a nice collection.
