The World of Green and Black

Here you’ll find everything to do with my World of Green and Black. Stories, bestiary entries, artworks, and any other bonus piece of information.

A graphite drawing of a strange nest. It is made of stones and eggshells rather than sticks, and in the centre are random objects, including a gun, a chalice, a few jewels, and a round object that is probably an egg. A plain egg, not one decorated like an Easter Egg.
You could say this page is a treasure trove of information.

Stories

This world exists because I want to tell stories that explore human nature using the most non-human aliens I could imagine. So far, I have published two novellas that will remain free here on my website.

Neighbour

The cover of "Neighbor" by Jayde Holmes. The cover is a digital image, purely in green and black. There is a green background, with an illustration of a tree decorated in windchimes, ropes, and a birdhouse. There is a small child standing under the tree, wearing a jacket that has large shoulderpads and no sleeves over a simple tunic and holding a ball. The child is frowning. This illustration is made entirely with black lines. The title, (spelt the American English way for now) is above the tree, whilst the author's name is below. All words have been made to look handwritten with black pen.

An unusual young Drid’s life is thrown into disarray after a traumatic encounter with Humans. In the aftermath of this incident, they find themselves faced with a choice that will force them to question their ideas about morality and personhood.

The Strongest in the Forest

The cover for "The Strongest in the Forest" by Jayde Holmes. The background is red and covered in dark red splatters like bloodstains. In the four ground is a digital sketch coloured only in black, white and gray of a crumbling square tower with a lone human on top facing down a large dragonlike creature that is clinging to the tower railings, with just a sword. The text is in white, with the book title at the top and the author name at the bottom.

The strongest tactician of a Drid Forest finds herself challenged by external enemies and internal rivals. The approach of aliens from the Green World is the latest threat her Forest faces, but they could be a great opportunity instead. As long as Strongest can navigate first contact.

THE BESTIARY

Here you’ll find information on all the strange wildlife that calls this strange planet home. Currently, new creatures are featured every month.

A graphite pencil drawing of a strange, fleshy mass, with small, stubby tentacles along its edge that end in curved blades. Along these tentacles are lines of tiny mouth-holes. Closer to the centre of the body are round, bumps that have a long thin tentacle growing out of their top. Most of these long tentacles are long enough to go out of frame, but the tips of a few tentacles can be seen, and there are long hair-like strands on the tips of them. There are smaller bumps close to the tentacle bumps, with hair-like strands growing out of them.
Drid
A graphite sketch of a canine-like creature in side profile with six legs and a long tail that ends in a small tuft of fur and two blades; a large curved one facing upwards, and a small spike pointing downwards. The creature has small fangs, pointed ears, and a curved growth on the side of its face. Its body is long and slender and its fur unmarked.
Bladetail
A graphite pencil drawing of a sky-dominator in flight, as seen from below. All six limbs are spread out, stretching the wing membrane, and the tail spurs are posed to possibly bend the bend the wing membrane for a turn. The chest spike is visible.
Sky-dominator
A graphite pencil sketch of a long worm-like creature with dozens of tiny legs. It is coiled up around itself, and at both the head and the tail it has two turrets that are shooting out silk. It has two simple round eyes on its head and tiny hairs all over its body.
Category One Bugs
A graphite pencil sketch of a large hair boar from a side on view. It has very shaggy fur, including a goatee, and appears to have two layers of tusks. Around the front tusks, which sick out like elephant tusks, reigns have been tied. These reigns are draped over a saddle on the boar's back, which is held in place by straps, buckles, and a tube of fabric around the animal's waist.
Megeasus
A graphite pencil drawing of an amorphous, blobby creature climbing on a tree branch. Lots of small tendrils are sticking out of its body.
Canopy Crawler
A graphite drawing showing a humanoid figure from behind, sitting on a rock and using a stone tool to crack a round object between its legs. The figure is naked, and has hair growing not just on its scalp, but on its neck, shoulders and upper back as well. It has two slightly curved, flat horns sticking out of the hair on the back of its head. Both horns end in long hairs.
Biped
A thick, cylindrical tower stands in a forest, overgrown with vines. A pathway leads up to a tall door, and it ends in a pointed top. Two rings surround it near the top; an observation ring close to the tower made of windows, and a torus built out from the tower covered in satellite dishes.
Tower of Knowledge
A graphite pencil sketch of a six-legged rodent with big eyes and ears and a long, hairy protrusion on the back of it's head. It has a hairless tail with thick grooves.
Pollinator
A pencil drawing of a strange bug with two body segments (a round abdomen and a longer head/body) four small legs that end in claws, two massive pincers on either side of its head and two smaller mandibles at the front. It has three clumps of spider-like eyes on its body.
